Scholarship Details

The Germany CGIAR++ Science and Impact Hub PhD Scholarship 2027 is an opportunity for aspiring researchers who want to pursue doctoral studies at a German university while contributing to international research on sustainable agriculture, food security, biodiversity, climate change, and development.

The programme provides a monthly scholarship of €1,800 for three years, with the possibility of a 12-month extension if the research progress indicates that the PhD can be completed within that additional period. Successful applicants may also request a research grant of up to €25,000 to support research-related expenses.

The Germany-CGIAR++ Science and Impact Hub plans to support 10 PhD candidates in the current call. Applicants must hold a relevant master's degree, develop a research proposal jointly with a German university professor and a senior CGIAR++ scientist, and connect their proposed research to an ongoing CGIAR++ programme or project.

Scholarship Requirements

To be considered for the Germany CGIAR++ Science and Impact Hub PhD Scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Applications are possible with a Master's degree in Agricultural Sciences or a related field (e.g., biology, geography, sociology, veterinary medicine, marine biology, forestry, political science, law, economics, etc.) with an above-average final grade.

  • Candidates interested in applying for the scholarship must get in contact with a senior CGIAR++ Scientist and a professor affiliated to a German university to develop the scientific proposal together. Only applications from such “tridems” will be accepted.

  • Candidates must be hosted by a CGIAR++ Center, attached to an ongoing CGIAR++ research activity, preferably in the form of an international, multidisciplinary project. The envisaged PhD project must be complementary and provide added value to the ongoing CGIAR++ research activity.

  • Candidates must be jointly supervised by a CGIAR++ senior scientist and a professor affiliated to a German university.

  • Candidates must enroll in a PhD study program at a German University but do not need to be German nationals. Applicants from CGIAR++ partner countries are welcome, and we particularly encourage female students to apply.

Benefits

1. Monthly scholarship of €1,800

Selected candidates will receive €1,800 per month for three years. This financial support can help scholars manage their living expenses while concentrating on doctoral research.

2. Possible 12-month extension

The scholarship may be extended for an additional 12 months if the candidate's progress indicates that the PhD can be completed within the extension period. The extension is conditional, not guaranteed.

3. Research grant of up to €25,000

Candidates may request a research grant of up to €25,000 to cover eligible expenses associated with their doctoral projects. The proposed expenditure should support the research objectives and comply with the programme's funding rules.

4. Joint academic and scientific supervision

Scholars will receive supervision from two key members of their research team:

  • A professor affiliated with a German university.

  • A senior scientist affiliated with a CGIAR++ research centre.

This arrangement connects university-based doctoral education with applied international research.

5. Scientific training and seminars

The Hub provides scientific support through courses and seminars. These activities are intended to strengthen research skills and contribute to structured doctoral training at participating universities.

6. International research experience
The programme connects doctoral candidates with ongoing research activities across CGIAR++ centres. Depending on the project, scholars may undertake fieldwork in different regions where these programmes operate.

How to Apply

Follow these steps to prepare an application.

Step 1: Review the official scholarship requirements

Visit the official application page and read the eligibility criteria, required documents, and submission instructions.

Confirm that your academic background and intended research are suitable for the programme.

Step 2: Identify a suitable CGIAR++ scientist

Find a senior scientist whose research expertise matches your intended doctoral topic.

Your proposed project must connect to an ongoing CGIAR++ research programme or project, so review the relevant centre's research activities before contacting potential supervisors.

Step 3: Identify a professor at a German university

You must also establish contact with a professor affiliated with a German university that can award PhD degrees.

The Hub does not arrange the supervisory connections for applicants. Candidates are responsible for identifying suitable researchers and establishing the necessary relationships.

Step 4: Develop your research proposal

Work with both prospective supervisors to prepare a scientifically sound research proposal.

Your proposal should explain the research problem, objectives, methodology, expected contribution, and relationship to the ongoing CGIAR++ activity. Use the prescribed template and follow its instructions.

Step 5: Prepare your application documents

Gather your motivation letter, CV, research proposal, MSc certificate, transcript, and accepted proof of English proficiency.

Ensure that your CV and motivation letter meet the one-page requirements and that the necessary documents are signed where required.

Step 6: Arrange the supervisor documents

Ask your German university professor and CGIAR++ scientist to prepare their required recommendation and supervision documents.

You must also arrange the Hosting Agreement from the relevant CGIAR++ centre.

Allow sufficient time for supervisors and their institutions to complete these requirements.

Step 7: Submit your application

Use the official application page to follow the current submission instructions:

Apply here: https://hub.landscapealliance.org/phd-research-scholarship/application

Ensure that your application and all supporting documentation are submitted according to the instructions before the deadline.

Step 8: Monitor your email

Check your email regularly for communications about your application, possible clarification requests, or subsequent steps in the selection process.
